Humans find it very easy to connect very different ideas - sound and image, colour and sound, colour and taste, and so on. Computers, however, do not operate in the same way. One of the principal difficulties is opening up the computer to the 'outside world' - to connect the 'different realms' of, say digital electronics and mechanised devices, to make true real world sounds digitally (that is, not using samples!).
